Final days in Bergen and Return to Seattle

Hello,

The last months in Bergen went fast, although the long summer days left plenty of light to enjoy the mild weather! The snow had long since left the tops of the local surrounding mountains in Bergen and the trees began sending out fresh sprouts. My time was spent between coding on the Linear Precipitation Model and finishing up my Master's Thesis. A server crash back at UW delayed some simulations critical for the thesis, but eventually all results were obtained and I submitted the thesis on time!!! The 2-layer version of the precipitation model has been tested for ideal hydrostatic and non-hydrostatic cases, including a paramterization of microphysics for solid and liquid hydrometers. Current work for the summer quarter at UW will continue testing the model over the real terrain of the Sierra Nevada mountains. This model (in Matlab) will be set up for easy use by students to understand the basic controls on orthographic precipitation. This work would not have been possible without the guidance from Idar Barstad, who acted as my UiB advisor and guided me through proper troubleshooting techniques while working on the precipitation models.

Finally, I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the Valle Scholarship program and Dayna Cole for all of the help preparing for this stay. During my last 9-months I have been exposed to many different academic systems, view points on issues of climate change and opinions on the approach to modeling. All of these experiences have helped expand my perspective of what is possible to achieve.

Thank you,
Nic
